Victory in
Europe - VE Day
Sixty-seven years ago, at one minute past
midnight on May 8, 1945, hostilities in the European theatre of war ceased and
the world celebrated the end of the war in Europe.
While rejoicing at the final victory,
Canada took stock of its losses.
42,042 men and women of Canada's armed
forces died during the war : 22,917 in the Canadian Army, 17,101 in the RCAF and
2,024 in the RCN. 54,414 were wounded and 8,995 taken prisoner.
The Merchant Navy suffered 1,451 killed on Canadian-flagged ships.
We will remember them! We will remember
them!
