Public Speaking Contest for Zone G -5 for 2024 will be
held on Saturday, 24 February at the Westboro Legion
located at 389 Richmond Road. |

The public speaking contest will be
held at the Westboro Branch (480) of the Royal Canadian Legion (RCL) located at
389 Richmond Road. The contest is open to all students attending schools in
Ottawa and district, with the following exceptions:
-
Schools in the former City
of Kanata – please contact the RCL, Kanata Branch 638, for their contest
date;
-
Schools in the former
Township of West Carleton – please contact the RCL, West Carleton Branch
616, for their contest date;
-
Schools in the former
Township of Osgoode – please contact the RCL, Osgoode Branch 589, for their
contest date
-
Schools in the former
Township of Greely – please contact the RCL, Greely Branch 627, for their
contest date.
The Public
Speaking Contest is divided into two parts:
Part One is for grades 1 to 6 and
check-in time at Westboro Branch, 890 Richmond Road is at 8:00 a.m. with the
contest starting at 9:00 a.m.
Part Two is for grades 7 to 12 and
check- in time is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. with the contest starting at 1:00
p.m.
The topic for
speeches is left to each student’s discretion and speeches can be submitted in
either French or English. Because of the short time frame, we suggest
pre-registration as soon as possible. The number of entries is restricted as
follows:

grades 1 to 6 – 30
entries and
·
grades 9 to 12 – 30
entries.
Important Items to Remember

Public
Speaking Contest is open to all students in Grades 1 to 12
-
Speeches can be in either English or French.

Public
Speaking Topic is Student’s Choice (i.e. whatever the student wishes to
speak about). Hint: Student should choose a topic that will grab the
attention of the audience and judges.

Students may change their topic up to the final registration date (In 2024
it will be 24 February).

Time
length for speeches are as follows:
a. Grades 1 to 9 – 3 to 5 minutes
b.Grades 10 to 12 – 5 to 7 minutes
-
Initial registration is done by email or fax and final registration is done
on the day of the
public speaking contest.

In
2024 competition will go through 4 levels – Zone, District, Area (District G
and F), Provincial.

Zone
winners in each category will advance to the next level of competition –
District G – which will be held on Saturday 23 March at Legion Branch 434
located in Chesterville.

The
winning student at Area in each speaking category and one parent will be
offered an all – expense paid trip to the site of the Provincial finals.
